EDT wins 1st and 4th Place at the 21st Annual Jerry Sanders Design Competition
Monday, March 10, 2008
The Chicago Engineering Design Team (EDT), UIC.s premier robotics
team competed in the
AMD Jerry Sanders Creative Design Competition
on March 6th and 7th, 2008 at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign and won first prize. This contest requires a team
of students to build a fully functional robot that has to complete a
certain task in order to score points. There were 17 robots competing
in this years competition with 6 of them coming form UIC and four of
those were built by EDT, The goal of this years competition was to
pick up Frisbees and hula-hoops and deposit them into a scoring box and hook.
The competition allows the robots to attack each other and fights
often broke out between the robots, with EDT usually being victorious.
Dan Arthur Belarmino and Leeder Hua were the driver and scout respectively
for Ares, the robot that won first place. Another EDT robot named Thor
placed forth place, being driven by Steven Kearney, and scouted by Rayna
Saito. The other two robots from EDT were also impressive, with Odin
scoring the most points in regular play, second only to Ares and being the
robot that disabled every hostile robot it met. Loki was a small ten pound
robot which was semi-autonomous and was the only robot under 130 pounds, yet
it outscored seven other teams that had full sized robots.
